STD Testing and Treatment

Most STDs don’t have symptoms. Stay in the know and get tested.

While discussing STDs isn’t always comfortable, it is important to talk about it with your partner and our Ridgewood, NJ, OBGYNs Dr. Eric Bentolila and Dr. Jacqueline Saiita. If you are sexually active, regular STD testing can keep both you and your partner safe. Here’s what you should know about STD testing, as well as ways to treat common STDs:

You can have an STD and not have symptoms

That’s right; you could have an STD and not even know it. Symptoms can show up weeks, months or even years after being infected (in fact, it can take up to 10 years for someone with HIV to even notice symptoms). Some people notice little to no symptoms and don’t even suspect that they might be an STD. That’s why it’s best to play it safe and to talk to your Ridgewood, NJ, OBGYN about testing if you are sexually active.

Most STDS are treatable

Four out of eight STDS can be cured with medication. These include syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. Certain strains of HPV will go away once the body has shed the infection (this can take years, though). While there is no cure for herpes and HIV, they can be properly managed through medication and healthy lifestyle changes. Your doctor can discuss treatment options with you, if you do test positive for an STD.

How often you get tested depends on several factors

Some people may benefit from getting tested twice a year while others may choose to get tested once a year or every few years. It really depends on certain factors surrounding your sexual history and habits.

Those who do not wear condoms or practice safe sex, as well as those who have multiple sexual partners at a time may want to strongly consider getting tested more regularly by their OBGYN. Be honest and upfront about your sexual history so that your gynecologist can provide proper recommendations for how often you should get tested and which tests you should undergo.

Untreated STDs can cause serious complications

Certain STDs can lead to serious complications such as infertility if left untreated, so it’s important that you are getting tested and taking your health seriously. By catching STDs early on we can provide you with the treatment you need to prevent fertility problems and other issues from happening to you.

Regardless of whether you are experiencing symptoms of an STD or not, you can turn to our Ridgewood, NJ, OBGYN for STD testing anytime. Make your sexual health a priority. We can even test during your next annual gynecology visit. Just give us a call at (201) 447-1700.
