When To Talk To Your OBGYN About Irregular Bleeding

Although it's known as "the time of the month," menstrual cycles aren't always predictable. Many women may experience irregular bleeding associated with their menstrual cycle; this is known as menorrhagia. Whether it's spotting on a day that you're not supposed to have your period, or having a short cycle one month and a longer one the next, this is something that Dr. Eric Bentolila and Dr. Jacqueline Saitta, your OB/GYNs in Ridgewood, New Jersey, want to discuss with you. Some details about this common gynecological problem are outlined below.

Causes of irregular bleeding

Your Ridgewood OB/GYN treats patients with certain medical conditions that affect how their menstrual cycle functions. Endometriosis, blood disorders, and infections can cause the uterine lining to shed at times other than your period. Hormonal medications, in particular those that contain estrogen or progesterone, can often throw off menstrual cycles, causing an irregular pattern of bleeding throughout the month. Anti-inflammatory medication or those that prevent blood clots can also have an effect on the menstrual cycle.

Treatment for irregular bleeding

There are a variety of ways that your Ridgewood OB/GYN can help you manage irregular bleeding. Diagnosing and treating an infection, for example, may completely eliminate the problem. If bleeding tends to happen after intercourse, your doctor may order some tests such as a Pap smear, ultrasound, or biopsy to determine the underlying cause. Oral contraceptives or hormone replacements can balance out your cycle. Surgical procedures may be necessary if conservative treatments haven't proved effective.

A word of caution: any time you experience bleeding during a pregnancy, no matter how slight, it warrants an immediate call to your Ridgewood OB/GYN for an evaluation.
